Abstract

This paper seeks to clarify the meaning of the concept of social practice and its importance on John Rawls’ thinking. The purpose is to rescue a central idea in his conception of justice as fairness, namely that it refers only to practices or social institutions, specifically practices that have a political character. From the analysis of the notion of rule, it compares Rawls’ and Wittgenstein’s perspectives, in an effort to demonstrate that social and immanent understanding of practices does not have to be conservative or arbitrary.
